About Jonathan Rubinstein

THERE IS A METHOD. THERE ARE TECHNIQUES AND PHILOSOPHIES.  BUT WITHOUT EMPATHY, INTUITION, AND RESONATING EXPERIENCE THESE ARE JUST TOOLS IN A BOX.

    TESTIMONIALS

“Jonathan’s guidance has been honed by years of experience and training, complemented by great capacity for empathy and compassion.  He prodded and led me to the next stages of my life, and he continues to be one step ahead of me…but I’m catching up.”                                                                                                Stephanie P. NYC

“It’s obvious from your life (and school) qualifications that you are one of the few people who could be trusted to coach lives. You’ve had the life of many people. Which is crucial."

                                                                                                      Paul B.  NYC

“I never thought I needed coaching in my life journey until I met Jonathan. Then I realized that the rare combination of high intelligence, top professionalism and a strong intuition makes the whole difference.  I think my life will never look the same after the insights I gained while working with him.”

"...I now awake each day knowing the most valuable words I have ever heard...'time is the only loan in life we are given,' were said to me from a calm and consistent voice of my life coach...I knew instantly that his voice resonated within me as a sage I would choose to journey with.  I am grateful and honored to call Jonathan my coach, partner, and friend on the path of this life....A Life Coach who does not fit into the realm of the ordinary A,B,C,D, or F.  Our work has been Extraordinary..."

"I have been working with Jonathan...for two years.  There really are not words to express exactly how much Jonathan assists me and stands for me...I would need to write a very long book....However, I will share a quote from him that he consistently says to me in that calm assertive voice of his,"Zev, the only distractions in life are the ones you create for yourself. Thanks, Jonathan>"

I

I was born near Boston several weeks after my parents arrived in America with two young, sick boys, fleeing the Nazis.  It was the second week of World War II.  My first paying job was in a kosher slaughter house at age six.  Educated in public schools, I graduated Harvard College in 1961 magna cum laude and phi beta kappa.  I received a PhD. in history from Harvard University in 1968.

Stirred by the political upheaval of the 1960s, I declined a career as a teacher and scholar, and became first a newspaper reporter and then joined the Philadelphia Police Department where I was a patrol officer for several years.  While a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Law School I completed City Police (New York: Farrar, Strauss, 1973), a study of police work that is still used in university courses and police training academies. \

In 1973, I moved to New York City where I worked for several years as a wholesale liquor salesman to do research on organized crime and political corruption.  This work enabled me to found the privately-funded Center for Research on Institutions and Social Policy, Inc. (CRISP).  Under my direction we did research on drug markets, gambling, excise tax fraud, the underground economy, money laundering, various sex rackets, and community policing.  We produced numerous reports and several books, as well as articles in newspapers and magazines.

I have published in many newspapers and magazines, including The New Yorker, and have written several books and novels.  Before discovering coaching, I owned a Native American art business, taught world history in several colleges and took a certification in Life Coaching at New York University.

As an active sea kayaker for more than twenty-five years, I have circumnavigated Manhattan eight times, and participated in expeditions to the Sea of Cortez and the Queen Charlotte Islands.  I have climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, hiked and camped extensively in the rugged wilderness of the Teton, Wind River and Absaroka mountain ranges of western Wyoming.  I lived with Bedouin in the Sinai Desert for almost six months.  On November 4, 2007 I successfully completed my first marathon, in New York City.

I have two adult sons (34 and 30) whose love and trust I have earned.  Although my two marriages each ended in divorce, these experiences have deepened my appreciation for the importance of partnership, love and solidarity in a balanced and complete life.  My life goals are to die whole and joyful.  I can find no reason why the last five minutes of this life should be less joyful than the first five.  This is the reason I call my practice, Coaching the Journey.
